Colic is the #1 cause of death in horses. The decision to pursue surgery often comes down to cost, but Tennessee Equine Hospital’s Promise Program removes that burden. With your enrollment, you protect your horse while helping our team ensure no family has to face that decision alone.
For 15 years, the Promise Program at Tennessee Equine Hospital has been saving horses’ lives. More than 75 horses have received life-saving colic surgery through this program, and today, over 1,000 horses are enrolled. Now, we’re relaunching with exciting updates, and we want your horse to be protected, too.
What's New:
- Annual Enrollment Fee: $75 per horse – an increase from $50. This fee goes directly into a shared fund that helps Tennessee Equine Hospital provide colic surgery for horses in our Promise Program.
- Expanded Colic Surgery Coverage: If colic surgery is needed, we will cover $12,000 in surgery and post-op care at Tennessee Equine Hospital — an increase from $8,500.
- No Same-Day Call Fee: Enrolled horses receive same-day emergency coverage during business hours with just a regular call fee.
Your Promise: Wellness Schedule
If you promise to allow our team to deliver quality wellness care, we promise to supply colic surgical treatment at our Thompson’s Station hospital to your horse at no cost to you!
When you enroll, you agree to partner with our team at Tennessee Equine Hospital to ensure your horse’s complete wellness through a customized care plan, which includes:
- Annual Fecal Egg Count
- Two Dewormers Per Year
- Annual Vaccines Tailored to Your Horse’s Lifestyle and Travel Needs
- Annual Coggins Test, If Needed
- Annual Dental Exam (And Treatment, If Needed)
The wellness treatment schedule will be built by an enrolling doctor and will be delivered by the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital collectively as needed to maintain compliance. All of these items must be performed by the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital and are not valid if delivered by an alternate source.

We promise to provide:

- A trusted partnership focused on keeping your horse healthy year-round.
- Same-day emergency coverage during business hours with just a regular call fee.
The Promise Program qualifies your horse for colic surgery and post-operative care provided annual requirements are met and/or scheduled and your account is in good standing. All pre-operative colic care is the responsibility of the owner. Any outstanding annual requirements will be pre-billed and charged at the time of surgery.
There are no restrictions on who can enroll as horses of any age and history of prior surgery qualify.
The key is getting your horse signed up before this situation arises. There is a 48-hour waiting period after enrollment before the promise of colic surgical care is initiated.
