IgG Testing: Some people opt to give a plasma transfusion against Rhodococcus equi shortly after birth. Please indicate if you would like this performed (estimate $900).

We test the foal’s IgG after birth to make sure there was proper transfer of immunity to the foal. If the IgG is low, we can give an oral IgG supplement (Seramune) or IV plasma.

The Seramune is $200-450 (depending on how many bottles). The plasma is $600-900 (depending on type of plasma).

Foaling Procedure

Your mare will be monitored closely throughout her stay and her foaling will be attended. Most foalings go smoothly with minimal intervention. If the foaling is not progressing normally (dystocia), we will contact you as early in the process as possible. If we are unable to fix the dystocia, the next step is to anesthetize the mare and attempt assisted vaginal delivery. An estimate range for this procedure is typically $1500-2000 depending on the time and medications required.

If a C-section is an option, we would then progress to that quickly. C-section is comparable to a colic surgery in that it requires a full abdominal incision with a 2-3 month recovery period. The estimate for this procedure through discharge without major complications is $8000-10000.

We will make every attempt to contact you early in the foaling process if something is abnormal. If we are unable to reach you, it will be helpful for us to know the following information:

If the foal is the priority and a traditional C-section is not an option, we can perform a terminal C-section in which the mare is euthanized after removing the foal.
