Colic is the number one health risk for horses and the leading cause of death. the decision of doing colic surgery is difficult due to the simple economics of the expense related to surgery and the after care.
Tennessee Equine Hospital is committed to the health and wellness of your horse. The Promise program is a wellness initiative from the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital to deliver quality care for your horse year around. After years of treating horses in this region, T.E.H. has developed a quality checklist of items we believe to be the best for your horse's health.
In The Promise program we take over all cost of treatment if and when your horse needs to have surgery. This includes all post-operative care for a total of $7,500 in treatment. The preoperative colic care is your responsibility, but the colic surgery and post-operative care is provided by the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital at no cost to you!
Required Annual Schedule
The wellness treatment schedule will be built by an enrolling doctor and will be delivered by the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital collectively as needed to maintain compliance. All of these items must be performed by the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital and are not valid if delivered by an alternate source.
The Promise program qualifies your horse for $7,500 in colic surgery and post-operative care providing the annual requirements are met and/or scheduled and the owner's account is in good standing.
What will my annual cost be for fulfilling the checklist for one horse?
The average cost is $450 per horse annually, but can vary depending on your horse's wellness schedule.
Are Farm call Fees included in the plan?
No, farm call charges vary depending on distance and number of owners serviced.
If I bring my horse to the hospital for wellness care, is there an office fee?
There is no extra charge for office visits, only the cost of the service.
Do i have to complete all of these checklist items at once to join the program and qualify for the colic surgical assistance?
No, however, all of the checklist items must be completed each year based on the agreed upon schedule when enrolling
Is my horse covered if he needs surgery the day after he is enrolled?
Yes, by signing up for The Promise program, a checklist schedule has been developed and his annual physical has been performed; he is covered for the program the next day, even if he has not completed all of the checklist items.
If i choose to do my own vaccines can my horse be a part of The Promise Program?
No. Vaccines and dewormer must be purchased through Tennessee Equine Hospital in order to be eligible for the program. Dewormer may be self-administered, but must be purchased from Tennessee Equine Hospital.
Does my horse have to have his teeth floated every year?
No, but your horse must have an oral exam performed by one of our doctors. Most horses will need their teeth floated once a year.
can i bring fecal samples by the office?
Yes, by providing a fecal sample ahead of time, the quicker it is to establish an annual worming schedule.
If i make the promise and my horse does colic, what do i do?
The team at Tennessee Equine Hospital is available 24/7 to support your horse when colic arises. Simply call the Emergency Phone Number and you will be put in touch with the on-call doctor.
Is there an age restriction for my horse to qualify?
No, all horses, donkeys, and mules are eligible.
if my horse has already HAD colic surgery, can he still be on the the program?
Yes, some horses may require two or three colic surgeries in their lifetime. This in no way disqualifies them from the program. The team here at Tennessee Equine Hospital is dedicated to the health and welfare of your horse.
is non-surgical colic covered in the program?
No, the treatment for non-surgical colic is the responsibility of the horse owner.
If my horse needs colic surgery how will the program work?
When the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital determines that colic surgery is indicated, an exploratory surgery will be performed to determine the cause of colic and an ethical treatment plan will be determined at no cost to you. The program qualifies you for a credit up to $7,500 for colic surgery and post-operative care providing that the annual requirements have been fulfilled or scheduled and the owner's account is in good standing.
what is the success rate of colic surgery?
The success of colic surgery is directly related to how long your horse has been colicking. The sooner the cause is determined and the treatment plan is established, the higher the success rate.
If I am out of town and my horse needs colic surgery at another facility, is he covered?
No, the benefit is only when surgical care is provided at Tennessee Equine Hospital locations.
Whose responsibility is it to make sure that the entire checklist of items are performed annually?
This is a team approach between the owner and the team at Tennessee Equine Hospital collectively. It is the responsibility of the owner to keep all files and paperwork updated as needed and to schedule yearly physicals based on availability.
How do i enroll my horse in The promise program?
Simply set up an appointment for an annual physical and treatment schedule along with signing The Promise Enrollment form that you can fill out online or download the PDF, fill it out, and give to the doctor at the time of service. Once the physical exam is completed and the wellness schedule has been developed, the horse is enrolled.
Is there an annual fee aside from the cost of care?
Yes, there is a $50 enrollment fee that is paid annually to remain in the program.
