Job Opportunities and Internships
Description: A compensated one year internship in equine exclusive practice beginning June 1, 2009 and extending to June 1, 2010. The purpose of this internship is to expose the intern to all aspects of equine practice including lameness, internal medicine, reproduction, pediatrics, elective and emergency surgery, etc. Will provide exposure to elective and emergency surgical procedures with the completion of our new surgical addition. Applicants interested in a private practice equine career will benefit most from this internship.Practice Description: A five doctor equine exclusive practice located in Williamson County, Tennessee. We see a variety of disciplines with the majority being English Sport horses (dressage, jumpers). Our caseload is approximately 35% lameness, 35% reproduction, and 30% medicine (including pediatrics, hospital cases, and preventative). We are a mix of ambulatory (70%) and hospital cases/out-patient (30%). We are currently in the process of building a 16 stall addition to our hospital. The new addition will also house one major surgical suite and one minor surgical suite. Our current clinic is a well staffed 6 stall hospital with a full compliment of diagnostic/therapeutic equipment including video gastroscopy, video endoscopy, extra-corporeal shockwave, digital radiography, digital ultrasonography, cryotherapy, computerized hoof balance, power dentistry units, and a full laboratory. We also have a 15 stall satellite reproductive facility where we provide a full range of reproductive services including stallion handling and processing for both cooled and frozen semen, embryo transfer, and all mare breeding services including parturition service. We strive to provide top of the line care for our patients and clients.
Intern duties: Intern will initially be expected to provide support and daily assessment of hospital and reproductive center cases and support with ambulatory cases. As the intern becomes more comfortable with procedures and practice, responsibilities will be given accordingly. These duties will eventually include complete case management of hospital cases, overnight ICU foal cases, emergency rotation, lameness workup, and ambulatory caseload. We expect each person to progress at different levels, and no responsibilities will be delegated until the intern and the doctors are comfortable with the intern performing that task. We do expect the intern to progress at a reasonable pace and begin to practice equine medicine without direct supervision, as this is not an externship. We do not want a shadow for 12 months! This internship is to prepare you for a high level care opportunity in private equine practice.
Requirements: DVM/VMD degree, Tennessee licensure, and non-compete covenant agreement.
Compensation: Compensation package includes a competitive annual salary, a residence with all utilities (gas, electric, H2O) provided during the internship, health insurance plan, liability insurance, TN state license fee and professional privilege tax, AVMA membership, AAEP membership, paid vacation, and your own ambulatory vehicle (we pay gas, insurance, and upkeep).
